The Stranded Galapagos Freighter Has Been Removed

On Tuesday, June 15th, the Galapaface I, which ran aground off Punta Carola, San Cristobal, on May 9, was refloated and towed 12 miles outside of the boundaries of the Galapagos Marine Reserve where it was scuttled in 1,500 feet of water. Park officials said that they expect it to have very little impact on the environment. Authorities will continue to monitor the area where the ship ran aground for two months in order to evaluate the environmental damage caused by the accident.
